How to become a better blogger
Blogging is becoming hugely important for companies wanting high search engine rankings. It's also an excellent way to stay in front of your clients and customers, and to let them know how your company can solve their problems.
Blogging must be done regularly, however. Usually once or twice a week if it's to be fully successful.
There are several keys to becoming a good blogger, one whose copy everyone wants to read. Follow these tips and you’ll be well on your way to blogging success.
What to blog
You need to supply good information. Make your blog unique, make it useful and make it interesting. Copying others’ material is fine only for retweets and Facebook likes. For everything else – web content included – your words need to be your own.
Be brave about offering opinions. Share insights into your area of expertise, and offer tips, ideas and hints that most people don’t know. Let them understand that you’re the go-to person when they want to know more about your field, or know someone who needs your help.
Offer your assistance. Be generous with your knowledge so that people see you as someone who’ll go the extra distance to help others. The more you give, the more you will get back.
How to blog
Don’t ramble. Be concise. Have your ideas well thought out and well laid out before hitting the submit button. Sentences should be around 25 words.
When writing, put yourself in the shoes of your readers – and remember they won’t have your experience and knowledge in the subject matter. Take out all the jargon and technical terms.
Write so that anyone can understand it. Don’t use lots of multi-syllable words.
Begin with an attention-grabbing headline. Make it memorable to encourage your readers to delve into the blog. A boring headline will only encourage them to click away from your site.
Keep keywords in mind when you write. These are what the search engines will pick up when they crawl the internet, and you want them to index your blog in the right place. It also helps people interested in your topic find your blog.
Don’t write War and Peace, keep your blog to between 250 and 500 words. People don’t have the concentration levels to read long blog posts and will abandon yours before they’ve finished if it is too long.
Add relevant graphics and photos to break up the text. This will make it look more attractive to readers.
Insert links. These are the URLs of websites that will amplify your message. Make them hyper links so readers only have to click on them to be taken to the correct web page.
Link your blog to your other social media sites, Facebook and Linkedin etc. This creates valuable backlinks to your website (if that’s where it’s sited).
Be careful with your use of humour as some readers may not understand the joke. Do not use swear words, either, if you want to keep your audience.
If you would like help with your blog, or merely want to find out if it's a good marketing tactic for your business, call or email contact Word Wizard for an informal, friendly chat. We love talking blogs!
