Childhood Nightmare Relived

One night, when I was about 10, I woke in the early hours to the sound of smashing glass all around me and to my bed pitching and yawing beneath me. It was jet-black, I had no idea what was going on, and was not a little terrified.

It turned out to be the Inangahua earthquake which registered 7.1 on the Richter scale and left 70 percent of the tiny West Coast township in rubble. We lived in another small town not far away, Murchison, so were spared the full force of the quake. It did, however, leave us with our walk-in pantry ankle-deep in broken glass and totalled preserves.
